District to launch new gifted and talented program for 2016-17 school year


School District 27J will open Achieve Institute, a "school within a school" that features a targeted curriculum for gifted and talented learners for the 2016-17 school year. The program, will be housed on the Pennock Elementary campus in Brighton, and give gifted and talented students a smaller, focused learning community with the benefits of a larger school campus. Applications will be accepted beginning Jan. 4, 2016. Informational meetings for interested parents will take place throughout the month of January.

Groundbreaking set for Brantner Elementary expansion


Brantner Elementary staff, school district leaders and community members will help break ground Dec. 17 on the expansion of Brantner Elementary in Thornton.
The $6.7 million project is the first of $248 million in bond projects approved by district voters in November 2015.

The 27,000 square-foot addition to the school, opened in 2012, will add a second classroom wing and allow the school to expand its capacity to 800 students in a rapidly growing section of Thornton.

Brighton High School students, from left, Colton Rice, Marcus Hernandez and Morgan Sanchez, spoke to 27J Board of Education directors Dec. 8 about the school's involvement in Special Olympics Colorado Project Unify. The program allows students with intellectual and physical disabilities to compete in athletic events. Students reflected on how the program has not only opened up new opportunities for students with disabilities but also helped bring their school community together.

fr​om new state English, Math assessments


The Colorado Department of Education released district and individual school results Dec. 11 from new English Language Arts and Math assessments administered this past spring to all state third- through 12th-grade students.
