District kindergarten students make big reading jump

More district first grade students will start this school year reading at their grade level thanks to added instructional coaching for teachers and a new "super" reading curriculum that is getting a thumbs up from teachers and students.

At the end of the 2015-16 school year, 82 percent of 27J kindergarten students headed to first grade tested at or above grade level. That was up from 38 percent of students meeting that target at the start of kindergarten last year.

11th graders hit high mark on final COACT scores

School District 27J high school juniors saved the best for last as they hit a record high on the final round of the COACT, the ACT test administered to all 11th graders as a state accountability measure.

Data released by the Colorado Department Aug. 11 showed 27J students scored 19.1 on the 2016 test. That marked a 5 point increase from the 2015 test and the highest score in the nine years the state has used the ACT as a district accountability measure.

Prairie View High School and district charter high school, Eagle Ridge Academy, also hit nine-year highs with respective scores of 18.9 and 22.7. Brighton High School’s score remained virtually the same at 18.5. The state ACT score rose to 20.4 in the latest data, also a nine-year high.

Beginning in 2017, Colorado high school juniors will be required to take the SAT college-entrance exam instead of the ACT. State education leaders believe the SAT better aligns with new state academic standards.
Students can still choose to take the ACT but it will no longer be funded by the state.

Ground broken on new elementary school

District and community leaders joined together to celebrate the start of construction on the district's newest elementary school.

Elementary School No. 12, under construction in the Reunion community of Commerce City, is scheduled to open in Fall 2017.

Students from the Reunion area joined 27J Board of Education members and City of Commerce representatives in turning the first shovels of dirt for the new project.

District celebrates completion of Brantner Elementary

Brantner Elementary students, parents and staff celebrated the completion of the school's 28,000-square-foot expansion Aug. 8.

The expansion adds 17 classrooms to the school and increases its capacity by 315. The first phase of Brantner opened in 2012 and was funded by surplus 2006 district bond money and the support of the district's Capital Facility Fee Foundation. Phase 2, which began construction in December 2015, was possible thanks to voter support of a $248 million construction bond.

Saunders Construction handled the construction of the expansion. Brantner officially opens to new students Aug. 22.
