High Schools gets community in the Halloween spirit
With Halloween right around the corner, student groups from Brighton and Prairie View High School have given kids the chance to get in the Halloween spirit.
Brighton High School Student Government hosted its annual Boo Bash Oct. 22. Children came dressed in costume to play games and participate in haunted craft projects.
Prairie View High School National Honor Society is sponsoring its Halloween Festival from 3 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29 at the school. Admission is free and there will be food, games, face painting and a costume parade.
District purchases site for fifth middle school
School District 27J has purchased a site for its fifth middle school.
The 21.3-acre site is at the southwest corner of 136th Avenue and Yosemite Street in Thornton, just west of where the district's third high school is under construction.
The purchase of land and construction of a new district middle school was one of the projects outlined in a $248 million construction bond approved by voters in 2015. The new middle school is planned to open in Fall 2020.

Venerable appointed to 27J Board of Education
Jenn Venerable has been appointed to the School District 27J Board of Education as its newest director.
Venerable was officially sworn in during the board's Oct. 25th meeting. She replaces former director Teresa Gallegos and represents a large area of the school district that includes the schools of North and Northeast elementary schools as well as Overland Trail Middle School.
Venerable, a Colorado native, is the director of Affiliate Relations for Dental Lifeline Network, a Denver-based humanitarian non profit.
Venerable and her family live in the Todd Creek community. She has two children with her oldest attending Brantner Elementary.
Board honors Reaching In/Out award winners The School District 27J Board of Education honored its Reaching In/Reaching Out Award recipients during its Oct. 25 meeting.
Reaching In Awards are presented to organizations, businesses and individuals who make a difference in 27J schools. Reaching Out Awards are presented on a quarterly basis to classified and certified district employees who go above and beyond to positively impact students.
Schools take part in annual all-school drill
Students and staff at 27J schools participated in an all-district drill Oct. 25.
27J has held an all-school drill on an annual basis for the past seven years to practice a different emergency protocal. The drill takes place in October in conjunction with the month being recognized as Safe Schools Month in Colorado.
This year's drill practiced the district's reunification procedure and gave students and staff the opportunity to practice how parents and students would be reunited in the event of a crisis.

Here They Are: Mr. BHS candidates take the stage
Eleven Brighton High School senior males are running for the title of Mr. BHS.
The Mr. BHS pageant was held on Oct. 26 when contestants competed in talent, formal wear and interview categories.
The main goal in naming a Mr. BHS is to raise money for the organization of Freedom Service Dogs of America. The organization trains and places service dogs with disabled veterans and runs on 100 percent donations.
All the Mr. BHS contestants have been raising funds for the service dog organization since last week. The top fundraiser, Chase Gustad, was named Mr. BHS. Gustad is pictured in the back row, third person from left.
