District purchases site for fifth middle school

School District 27J has purchased a site for its fifth middle school.

The 21.3-acre site is at the southwest corner of 136th Avenue and Yosemite Street in Thornton, just west of where the district's third high school is under construction.

The purchase of land and construction of a new district middle school was one of the projects outlined in a $248 million construction bond approved by voters in 2015. The new middle school is planned to open in Fall 2020.

Schools take part in annual all-school drill

Students and staff at 27J schools participated in an all-district drill Oct. 25.

27J has held an all-school drill on an annual basis for the past seven years to practice a different emergency protocal. The drill takes place in October in conjunction with the month being recognized as Safe Schools Month in Colorado.

This year's drill practiced the district's reunification procedure and gave students and staff the opportunity to practice how parents and students would be reunited in the event of a crisis.
